Ως τα μέσα του 19ου αιώνα η Κοπεγχάγη ήταν ακόμα κλεισμένη μέσα σε προμαχώνες και τάφρο, και δεν μπορούσε να μεγαλώσει πέρα από αυτά. Όταν τα τείχη έπεσαν, η λωρίδα γης που άφησαν δεν έγινε σπίτια. Ένα κομμάτι της έγινε αυτός ο κήπος, στρωμένος τη δεκαετία του 1870, και η λίμνη στη μέση είναι η παλιά αμυντική τάφρος, αφημένη εκεί που ήταν. Εδώ υπάρχουν περίπου δεκατρείς χιλιάδες είδη φυτών, τακτοποιημένα έτσι ώστε να περπατήσεις από ένα δανέζικο δάσος σε έναν βραχόκηπο με βουνίσια φυτά μέσα σε πέντε λεπτά. Το Σπίτι των Φοινίκων, από το 1874, είναι από χυτοσίδηρο και τζάμι, με μια στενή στριφογυριστή σκάλα που σε ανεβάζει ανάμεσα στις κορυφές των δέντρων. Μέσα κάνει ζέστη, έχει υγρασία και μυρίζει βροχή. Το καλοκαίρι ένα μικρότερο θερμοκήπιο γεμίζει πεταλούδες. Ο κήπος ανήκει στο πανεπιστήμιο, οπότε οι ταμπέλες δεν είναι στολίδι.

The Botanical Garden — An 1874 glasshouse standing on the city’s old defences
Until the middle of the nineteenth century Copenhagen was still shut inside ramparts and a moat, and could not grow past them. When the walls came down, the strip of land they left did not become housing. Part of it became this garden, laid out in the 1870s, and the lake in the middle is the old defensive moat, left where it was. There are about thirteen thousand kinds of plant here, arranged so that you can walk from Danish woodland to a rock garden of mountain plants in five minutes. The Palm House, from 1874, is cast iron and glass, with a narrow spiral staircase that takes you up among the treetops. Inside it is warm and damp and smells of rain. In summer a smaller glasshouse fills with butterflies. The garden belongs to the university, so the labels are not decoration.
