The Great Strahov Stadium — The biggest stadium ever built, and not for matches
Above the city, on the hill next to Petřín, lies something you would not believe without seeing it: a stadium whose field is three times as long and three times as wide as an ordinary football pitch. Nine pitches fit inside it. It was not built for matches, because two teams would never need that much room. It was built for mass displays of gymnastics, in which tens of thousands of people made the same movements at the same time, and the spectacle was the crowd itself. At its largest it could hold about two hundred and fifty thousand spectators, more than any other stadium in history. In the years of the communist government the displays were called Spartakiáda, and taking part was often not a real choice. After 1989 they stopped. Today there are ordinary training pitches inside the enormous walls, and the stadium is quietly growing old.
