St Vitus Cathedral — Begun in 1344 and finished in 1929
Charles IV began the enormous cathedral in the middle of the castle in 1344. The first architect was Matthias of Arras, and when he died the work passed to Peter Parler, who was then only twenty-three. Parler did things with stone that nobody had done before, and he carved into the building the faces of the people who were putting it up, his own among them. Then the money ran out. Wars came, and fires, and centuries. The church stood half built, with a temporary wall across the middle, and the people of Prague got used to seeing it that way. It was finished only in 1929, almost six hundred years after the first stone. Inside, the walls of the St Wenceslas Chapel are set with more than thirteen hundred semi-precious stones, and in a room above it the crown of Bohemia is kept behind a door with seven locks.
