Το 1475 οι κάτοικοι της Πράγας άρχισαν να χτίζουν αυτή τη σκούρα, μυτερή πύλη ως δώρο στον βασιλιά τους, τον Vladislav, που έμενε στο παλάτι ακριβώς δίπλα. Ήταν μία από τις πύλες στα τείχη της Παλιάς Πόλης, και από εδώ ξεκινούσε η Βασιλική Οδός: όταν ένας καινούργιος βασιλιάς πήγαινε να στεφθεί, η πομπή του περνούσε από αυτή την πύλη, διέσχιζε την πόλη και τη γέφυρα και ανέβαινε στο κάστρο. Η τελευταία τέτοια πομπή πέρασε το 1836. Ο βασιλιάς όμως έφυγε από το διπλανό παλάτι, το χτίσιμο σταμάτησε και ο πύργος έμεινε μισοτελειωμένος για αιώνες. Στο μεταξύ βρήκε μια πολύ πιο πεζή δουλειά: αποθήκη για μπαρούτι, δηλαδή πυρίτιδα, και από εκεί κράτησε το όνομά του. Τη μυτερή στέγη και τα περισσότερα στολίδια τα πρόσθεσε ο αρχιτέκτονας Josef Mocker στα 1875–1886. Δηλαδή το πιο «μεσαιωνικό» κομμάτι της πύλης είναι και το πιο καινούργιο.

The Powder Tower — A gift to a king, then a store for gunpowder
In 1475 the people of Prague began building this dark, pointed gate as a present for their king, Vladislav, who lived in the palace right next door. It was one of the gates in the walls of the Old Town, and the Royal Route started here: when a new king went to be crowned, his procession came through this gate, crossed the town and the bridge and climbed up to the castle. The last such procession passed in 1836. But the king moved out of the palace beside it, the building work stopped, and the tower stood half finished for centuries. Meanwhile it found a far duller job: a store for gunpowder, and that is where its name has stuck ever since. The pointed roof and most of the carving were added by the architect Josef Mocker in 1875–1886. So the most medieval-looking part of the gate is the newest part of it.
