The Petřín Tower — Shorter than the Eiffel Tower, but its top is higher
In 1891 Prague was getting ready for a great exhibition to show the world what it could build. Some of its people had been to Paris, seen the brand-new Eiffel Tower and come home saying they wanted one too. Within a few months this iron tower rose on top of Petřín hill, 63.5 metres high. It is five times shorter than the French one, but because it stands on a hill its top is higher above the sea than the top of the Paris tower. The funicular railway that carries you up was built for the same exhibition, and at first it ran on water: the carriage coming down filled with water, grew heavy, and pulled the other one up. Beside the tower a small building shaped like a castle hides a maze of mirrors, put up in the same year.
