Το 1980 πέθανε ξαφνικά ο John Lennon, ο τραγουδιστής των Beatles που έγραφε τραγούδια για την ειρήνη, και οι νέοι της Πράγας θέλησαν να τον θυμούνται. Κάποιος ζωγράφισε το πρόσωπό του σε αυτόν τον τοίχο και άλλοι πρόσθεσαν στίχους και ευχές. Εκείνα τα χρόνια όμως δεν επιτρεπόταν να γράφεις ελεύθερα τη γνώμη σου. Η αστυνομία έβαφε τον τοίχο άσπρο, κι εκείνος ξαναγέμιζε μηνύματα μέσα σε μία νύχτα. Έβαφαν, ξαναγέμιζε. Έβαφαν, ξαναγέμιζε. Έτσι ένας απλός τοίχος έγινε σύμβολο για κάτι που κανείς δεν είχε σχεδιάσει: οι ιδέες δεν σβήνονται με μια βούρτσα. Ο τοίχος ανήκει στον κήπο του Τάγματος της Μάλτας, που το 2019 τον ανακαίνισε και τον ανακήρυξε υπαίθρια γκαλερί, με κανόνες για το τι μπορεί να προσθέσει ο επισκέπτης. Ό,τι βλέπεις σήμερα μπορεί αύριο να έχει σκεπαστεί από κάτι άλλο. Είναι ίσως το μόνο έργο τέχνης της πόλης που δεν είναι ποτέ έτοιμο.

The Lennon Wall — They painted it white and next day it filled up again
In 1980 John Lennon, the Beatles singer who wrote songs about peace, died suddenly, and young people in Prague wanted to remember him. Someone painted his face on this wall and others added lyrics and wishes. In those years, though, you were not allowed to write your opinions freely. The police painted the wall white, and it filled up with messages again within a night. They painted; it filled up. They painted; it filled up. So an ordinary wall came to stand for something nobody had planned: ideas cannot be brushed out. The wall belongs to the garden of the Order of Malta, which restored it in 2019 and declared it an open-air gallery, with rules about what a visitor may add. What you see today may be covered by something else tomorrow. It is perhaps the only artwork in the city that is never finished.
