Για εκατοντάδες χρόνια αυτή ήταν η μόνη είσοδος στο Ντουμπρόβνικ από τη δύση. Πρώτα περνάς μια πέτρινη γέφυρα πάνω από μια τάφρο που δεν είχε ποτέ νερό, μόνο κήπο. Μετά έρχεται μια ξύλινη κινητή γέφυρα: κάθε βράδυ οι φρουροί τη σήκωναν με αλυσίδες, κλείδωναν την πύλη και παρέδιδαν τα κλειδιά στον άρχοντα της πόλης. Το πρωί τα έπαιρναν πίσω. Η πύλη δεν είναι μία αλλά δύο, μια εξωτερική του 1537 και μια παλαιότερη εσωτερική, και ανάμεσά τους ο δρόμος στρίβει. Η στροφή δεν είναι λάθος του χτίστη. Είναι όλη η ιδέα. Ένας εχθρός που περνούσε την πρώτη πύλη δεν μπορούσε να τρέξει ίσια μέσα· έπρεπε να σταματήσει, να στρίψει και να προχωρήσει αργά, ενώ οι φρουροί τον κοιτούσαν από ψηλά. The Pile Gate — Two gates, with a bend in between them
For hundreds of years this was the only way into Dubrovnik from the west. First you cross a stone bridge over a moat that never held water, only a garden. Then comes a wooden drawbridge: every evening the guards pulled it up with chains, locked the gate and handed the keys to the ruler of the town. Every morning they got them back. The gate is not one gate but two, an outer one from 1537 and an older inner one, and between them the road turns. The bend is not a builder’s mistake. It is the whole idea. An enemy through the first gate could not run straight in; he had to stop, turn and walk slowly, while the guards watched him from above. Over the arch stands Saint Blaise, Sveti Vlaho, holding a small model of the town in his hands as though he were keeping it safe.
