Big Onofrio’s Fountain — Twelve kilometres downhill, and not one pump
The old town stands on rock, and rock holds no water. Until 1438 people collected rain in cisterns and counted every bucket. Then the Republic sent to Naples for an engineer, Onofrio della Cava, and asked him for something hard: bring water from the springs at Šumet, twelve kilometres away, with no machines at all. The answer was a stone channel that drops only a tiny amount every metre. The water runs by itself, on gravity, exactly the way the Romans did it. Here, inside the walls, the channel ends in a stone fountain with sixteen sides and a dome. Sixteen carved faces pour the water out, and people still fill their bottles at them. The fountain was once loaded with carving; the great earthquake of 1667 shook nearly all of it off and left the faces.
