Πίσω από έναν τοίχο στην οδό Carmersstraat κρύβεται ένας κήπος όπου άνθρωποι ρίχνουν με τόξο εδώ και αιώνες. Η συντεχνία του Αγίου Σεβαστιανού ήταν αρχικά η ομάδα των τοξοτών της Μπριζ: πολίτες που εξασκούνταν τακτικά ώστε να μπορούν να υπερασπιστούν τα τείχη. Το βέλος γυρίζει μετά μόνο του στη γη, οπότε όλοι στέκονται σε ασφαλή απόσταση. Στη λέσχη έχει γραφτεί και ένας βασιλιάς: ο Κάρολος Β΄ της Αγγλίας, όταν ζούσε εξόριστος στη Μπριζ τον 17ο αιώνα. Από τότε οι Βρετανοί μονάρχες είναι επίτιμα μέλη.

The Sint-Sebastiaansgilde — Archers still training in the same garden after centuries
Behind a wall on the Carmersstraat hides a garden where people have been shooting bows for centuries. The Guild of Saint Sebastian began as the archers of Bruges: townsmen who practised regularly so that they could defend the walls. When bows stopped being weapons the club did not break up; it became a sport, and it is still going. Their contest is not a target on a wall. It is called popinjay shooting: a very tall wooden mast is raised in the garden, small wooden “birds” are fixed at the top, and the archers shoot straight upwards, trying to knock them off. The arrow then comes back down on its own, so everyone stands well clear. A king has been enrolled here too: Charles II of England, while he was living in exile in Bruges in the 17th century. British monarchs have been honorary members ever since.
