Πριν από 250 χρόνια, πάνω στο πράσινο ανάχωμα των τειχών, στέκονταν γύρω από τη Μπριζ περισσότεροι από είκοσι ανεμόμυλοι. Ο Sint-Janshuismolen χτίστηκε το 1770, δεν μετακινήθηκε ποτέ, και εξακολουθεί να αλέθει αλεύρι όταν φυσάει. The Sint-Janshuismolen — A house that turns bodily around to catch the wind
Two hundred and fifty years ago more than twenty windmills stood around Bruges on the green bank of the ramparts. The bank was the highest ground in a completely flat country, and up there the houses of the city did not block the wind. The Sint-Janshuismolen was built in 1770, has never been moved, and still grinds flour when the wind blows. It is a post mill: its whole wooden body, with the millstone and the miller inside it, balances on one huge upright trunk. A long beam runs down behind it to the ground, and the miller pushes that beam to swing the entire building round until the four sails face straight into the wind. Cloth was spread over the sails: more cloth in a light breeze, less when it blew hard. Four mills are left along this stretch today, and a little further on stands the Kruispoort, one of the four surviving gates.
