Η γη αυτή δεν ήταν πάντα δημόσια: ήταν ο κήπος ενός μοναστηριού των Φραγκισκανών, κλειστός για τους κατοίκους της πόλης επί αιώνες. Στα χρόνια της γαλλικής κατοχής, γύρω στο 1800, το μοναστήρι έκλεισε, και αργότερα η πόλη αποφάσισε να μη χτίσει εδώ αλλά να φυτέψει. Έτσι ένας ιδιωτικός κήπος έγινε πάρκο για όλους. Οι ντόπιοι το λένε ακόμη «Botanieke Hof», τον Βοτανικό Κήπο, από τα φυτά που δοκιμάστηκαν εδώ. Έχει μια μικρή λίμνη με πάπιες, ένα σιδερένιο κιόσκι του 19ου αιώνα όπου έπαιζαν μπάντες, και δέντρα αρκετά μεγάλα ώστε να κρύβουν τον ουρανό. The Koningin Astridpark — A friary garden that became a park for everybody
East of the centre, where the streets go quiet and the houses grow low, a park with very large trees opens up. This ground was not always public: it was the garden of a Franciscan friary, shut to the people of the city for centuries. During the French occupation, around 1800, the friary closed, and later the city decided not to build here but to plant. So a private garden became a park for everybody. Locals still call it the “Botanieke Hof”, the botanical garden, after the plants that were tried out here. It has a small pond with ducks, a 19th-century iron bandstand where bands used to play, and trees big enough to hide the sky. After a day of stone squares and dark churches, it is the greenest thing in Bruges.
